Our Story
So Far
Sky Tempesta Racing, was ignited by a chance encounter between Chris Froggatt and Eddie Cheever at a Ferrari test track session in the heart of Italy. The pair immediately had a connection and vision, and with Chris looking to embark on a motorsport career, Eddie was an ideal driving mentor and coach.
In the early chapters of Sky Tempesta Racing witnessed Chris’ debut racing season kick off with an impressive steak of podiums and wins in the Pro-Am class resulting in a 3rd place in the Ferrari Challenge championship in 2017. In 2018, Chris lined up once more on the European Ferrari Challenge series grid. A 100% finishing record consisting of 10 wins, 4 seconds, and a solitary non-podium (4th) place meant that he totally dominated the series, winning the championship by a remarkable margin of 130 points.
Energised even more by this success, the inevitable questions for the team were, “What’s next? What can we achieve? And can our passion, desire, and commitment enable us to compete at a higher level?”. There was only one way and place to find out, on the track!
Eager to continue capitalising on Eddie’s vast knowledge and experience as a driver, mentor and friend, Sky Tempesta Racing elected to step up to the challenge of ultra-competitive GT3 racing and enter the equally renowned Blancpain Endurance Championship and GT Open in 2019. Driving alongside Eddie in the GT Open.
Not afraid of the new challenge the Blancpain Endurance Championship would bring, Chris Froggatt teamed up with his Nations Cup partner, Chris Buncombe, who had won the 2018 Blancpain series. Sky Tempesta Racing needed a third driver for the endurance events. They lined up on the grid with Hong Kong “gentleman” racer Jonathan Hui. The trio finished 3rd in the GT Endurance Cup 2019.
With the evolution of the Blancpain series into the prestigious ‘GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS’ in 2020, Team Tempesta was presented with the opportunity to exhibit their prowess on the dual fronts of sprint and endurance racing. Even amidst the challenges of a pandemic-curtailed season, Chris and Eddie’s dynamic partnership triumphed, capturing 6 class victories in the Sprint Championship, with an additional 2 class wins courtesy of their second entry.
The succeeding years, 2020 and 2021 resonated with continued success, who drove the Ferrari 488 Evo to triumph. 2020 saw Chris and Eddie crowned the GT World Challenge European Sprint PRO-AM Champions, with Jon joining them to be the Overall PRO-AM Champions in 2020. The 2021 season in the GT World Challenge European Endurance PRO-AM Championship provided the trio a platform for victory, which saw the team take the Pro-Am Championships, winning both the Drivers and Overall Championships.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, in 2022 the team changed manufacturer from Ferrari to Mercedes. The season tested the team, but their teamwork and close bond showed through at the informous 24 Hours of Sp, where the team claimed a Podium despite all having had many set backs through out the season.
In 2023, Sky Tempesta Racing announced a new partnership with McLaren, driving the McLaren 720s Evo in the competitive British GT Championship with Chris Froggatt and Kevin Tse takeing the wheel. The longstanding trio of Chris Froggatt, Edward Cheever, and Jonathan Hui are taking on the GT World European Endurance Championship once again. The team also continue their partnership with Mercedes, entering into the Intercontinental GT Challenge driving the Mercedes AMG GT3 at circuits around the world.
Podiums and trophies aside, what these results have proven is that 5 short years after Chris Froggatt’s took to the track for the first time, the team has astutely teamed up with like minded amateur and professional drivers to form a highly respected and winning Pro-Am endurance racing team.
Sky Tempesta Racing, with its founding ethos of teamwork, talent and tenacity, has already led to triumph. Given the team’s spirit, enthusiasm, dedication and drive, they will most certainly achieve their biggest goals in the future.
